Electronically Commutated Motors

Electronically commutated motors, or ECMs, are the latest answer to the significant amount of electricity needed to power fans in refrigeration systems. These brushless motors use built-in inverters and permanent magnet rotors to drastically improve efficiency: They are 65% to 72% efficient, compared with the 12% to 45% efficiency range for commonly-used permanent-split capacitor, or PSC, motors with SCR.
